SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Firework stands are popping up as the Fourth of July approaches, and fire departments are preparing for one of their busiest times of the year.
Stevens County fire crews already responded to two suspected firework-related fires Wednesday night.
“July 4th is a pretty good indicator for us when wildland season is really in full throttle,” said Jeff Smetzler with the Spokane Valley Fire Department.
Firework stands in Deer Park saw long lines as sales began. Tim Matthews, who sells fireworks, said they turned away nearly 200 people yesterday because they weren’t allowed to sell until Thursday morning.
Spokane County Fire District 4 is preparing by fully staffing all six crew stations.
“We’re keeping our firefighters hydrated and basically paying attention to the surroundings, in preparations for possible fireworks,” said David Lachapelle with Fire District 4.
In Deer Park, where fireworks are legal, the fire department is making sure stands educate customers on safe use.
“Make sure the fireworks you’ve purchased has not gotten wet or been crushed,” Matthews advises. “If your grass is a little dry, water your lawn, perhaps before you launch some fireworks in your driveway. When it misfires, simply soak the firework and then tip it over on the side with a fire extinguisher and dispose of it.”
People can now report illegal firework activity on the SREC app to help prevent fires.
“If you’re firing off fireworks in a legal area, make sure you’re still being extremely cautious and you’re paying attention to where your fireworks are going,” Lachapelle said.
Firefighters say a few minutes of extra care can keep communities safe during the holiday weekend.
