Idaho lawmakers are condemning the gunfire ambush on firefighters in Coeur d’Alene on Sunday.
Around 2 p.m. on June 29, one or more gunmen ambushed and shot firefighters responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain. As of 5:30 p.m., at least two people, most likely firefighters, are dead, according to Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Bob Norris said in a news conference around 4:30 p.m. that law enforcement was “actively taking sniper fire.”
Idaho Governor Brad Little called the ambush a “heinous direct assault” on social media.
Congressman Mike Simpson also posted to X, calling the situation “gut-wrenching.”
Idaho Senator Mike Crapo said he was monitoring the situation and praying for the victims.
Senator Jim Risch also posted on X about the ambush.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X DHS is monitoring the situation.
