SPOKANE, Wash – Two Coeur d’Alene firefighters shot while fighting a fire on Canfield Mountain Sunday were brought by procession along Interstate 90 Sunday night to the medical examiner’s office in Spokane.
The Kootenai County sheriff says the firefighters were ambushed by a gunman. Three people were shot, two did not survive.
The procession of law enforcement officers, firefighters and ambulances left Kootenai Health just after 8:00 Sunday night.
People lined the overpasses, some waving flags, as the vehicles made the 36 mile drive.
The Spokane Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct the autopsies.
The fire department has not yet released the names of the firefighters who were killed.
