SPOKANE, Wash. – 60-year-old Tom Fuchs remembers getting a corduroy hat as a prize in the very first Hoopfest.
That was over 35 years ago.
He’s one of 29 people that have played in every single Hoopfest tournament. Tom has won twice with a handful of second place titles over his 35 years, but says these recent tournaments are extra special because he gets to play on the court with his son Tommy.
“Anytime I can play hoops with my boy… we just love balling together… he’s my doppelgänger.” Tom said.
This year… Tom, Tommy and Tommy’s roommate Thomas, joined forces as team aTOM bombs. Thomas says it’s been a joy being a part of Tom’s Hoopfest legacy.
“Hoopfest is about bringing people together and Tom is someone who brings people together. It’s kind of a microcosm that Tom has been a part of this for 35 years and we get to be a part of it,” Thomas said.
When I asked Tom how much longer he wants to continue the streak: “At least another 35 years”
