SPOKANE, Wash. — From snacks to commemorative jerseys, there are lots of ways to spend money this weekend at Hoopfest.
Players said they expect this weekend to make a dent in their wallets.
In Riverfront Park on Friday, people stepped inside an inflatable cash grab machine. But that wasn’t the only cash flowing in downtown Spokane.
Spectators can watch games free of charge. But after a long day in the hot sun, many want refreshments or even a sweet treat.
Team merchandise is also a popular purchase for many players and fans.
Some out-of-town visitors said traveling to Spokane wasn’t cheap, but it was worth it.
“I was more than willing to pay it. I saw the events online, so very excited,” said Jackson Winn, who is playing in Hoopfest for the first time.
Many people are supporting local businesses.
“In between one of the games, we went over to Boo Radley’s and got a couple things,” said Whitney Graber.
Local food truck owners look forward to Hoopfest all year.
“People come into Spokane, support local businesses, and bring their money to the economy here locally. And that’s very important for us to grow as a city,” said Jose Sosa, owner of The Cuban Way food truck.
For those who want to save money, experienced attendees recommend planning ahead.
“My parents always bring coolers of snacks and water just to try and save a little bit on that,” said Courtney Carolan.
