SPOKANE, Wash. — A sapling from the original chestnut tree outside of Anne Frank’s house has been planted in front of a Spokane middle school named after a local Holocaust survivor.
Community members gathered in front of Peperzak Middle School on Saturday to commemorate the planting of a chestnut sapling outside the school building.
The sapling was taken from a chestnut tree that grew outside of the annex where Anne Frank and her family hid from the German Nazis. It serves as a living memorial to Anne Frank. It was originally awarded by the Anne Frank Center USA in 2024.
Peperzak Middle School is named after 101-year-old Holocaust survivor Carla Peperzak, who knew Anne Frank. Peperzak was at the commemoration Saturday with her family.
