SPOKANE, Wash. — The historic Lowell School House in Vinegar Flats is up for sale for about $1.8 million.
The schoolhouse was built in 1899 and served Spokane Public Schools students until 1954. It was added to the Spokane Register of Historic Places in 2015.
The building sits in the quiet Southwest Spokane neighborhood of Vinegar Flats. Listing agents Khalil Beznaiguia and Marcy Mongan say it has been on the market for about a year.
“There’s so much history here,” local shops say about the area.
The school started small but expanded in 1917 due to student population growth, according to the Spokane Historic Preservation Office. The building is now about 6,000 square feet.
“Originally, it was a much smaller footprint. So you’ll see that in the basement. That basement footprint is the original school. And then two years later, this was all added on. And so you’ll see the building as it is today,” Beznaiguia said.
The listing agents say features from the 1900’s remain, including “plaster walls and the brick and the rounded arched windows, which make this property very unique,” Mongan said.
“It’s a blank canvas for whoever wants to do whatever it is they wish,” Beznaiguia said.
Local business owners are ready for growth and have ideas for the space.
Lauren Carney, owner of Vinegar Goods, sees multiple uses.
“Like a coffee shop in the front with easy, healthy grab-and-go meals and then maybe even a workout studio in one of the rooms. There’s plumbing for a bar in the basement,” Carney said.
Tami Haas, part-owner of Lucky Goods boutique, has a similar vision.
“I can just see it as a community Co-Op, or it’s a pretty large space that could hold local artists,” Haas said.
