ADA COUNTY, Idaho — The judge in the University of Idaho murders case told the prosecution and defense to prepare for Bryan Kohberger’s trial date to not change.
The defense team for the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students asked an Ada County judge to delay his murder trial in court today.
Judge Steven Hippler heard arguments from Kohberger’s defense saying his right to fair a trial was being impacted. Anne Taylor said the quantity of evidence they still need to go through required the trial to be delayed.
Taylor also argued an episode of Dateline, a book, and a docuseries set to be released had inside information that could improperly influence a jury.
The prosecution said legal standard and the court’s discretion show there’s no basis for a continuance.
The prosecution also said the publicity would not impact the ability to seat an impartial jury and cautioned the court against allowing the continuance because a delay won’t stop the publicity regardless.
Judge Hippler said he would consider the arguments and make a decision in short order. He advised both sides should prepare like the August trial date is holding.
Kohberger is accused of killing Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves in November of 2022. He faces the death penalty if convicted.
