STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — Two women were killed in a suspected DUI crash in Stevens County Sunday afternoon.
According to Washington State Patrol, 43-year-old Amber Calicoat of Clayton was driving north on Highway 395 about two miles south of Loon Lake around 4 p.m.
WSP says Calicoat tried to pass another northbound vehicle via the shoulder but sideswiped it instead.
That sent both vehicles into southbound lanes where Calicoat collided with a southbound vehicle driven by 21-year-old Abigail Hill.
The northbound vehicle Calicoat initially hit went off the road into a tree. Two adults in that vehicle were taken an area hospital. A two-year-old girl in the car was uninjured. WSP notes charges are pending against the driver of this vehicle but did not specify.
Calicoat and Hill both died at the scene.
Highway 395 was closed in both directions for several hours due to the crash. The cause is under investigation, but WSP suspects drugs and/or alcohol were involved.
