SPOKANE VALLEY — UPDATE: 11:26 a.m. on June 15 – Law enforcement shot and killed a man accused of multiple carjackings and murder on Sunday morning, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 8:30 a.m. on June 15, SCSO responded to a reported carjacking at Whistle Stop Coffee Shop on Sprague Avenue in Spokane Valley.
When deputies arrived, they learned the suspect was armed with an AR-15 rifle and a 9 mm. handgun and had stolen a car from a man and his daughter at the coffee shop.
SCSO said the man then drove east on I-90 toward Idaho, reaching speeds of up to 140 mph.
Deputies were unable to keep up and lost sight of the car near State Line.
According to Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris, once in Idaho, the man intentionally hit a motorcyclist after doing ‘donuts’ in a parking lot. The motorcyclist was moderately injured, but expected to be okay.
The suspect then attempted multiple carjackings at the Liberty Stop-N-Go on Seltice Way in State Line Village.
At one point, the suspect shot and killed a man who tried to help one of the attempted carjacking victims. He then successfully stole another car at the Stop-N-Go and got back on I-90 west.
Kootenai County deputies continued to pursue the man until he crossed back over into Washington.
Once back in Washington, the man carjacked another car near McKinzie Road and Wellesley Avenue in East Valley. SCSO said shots were fired during the carjacking, but no one was injured.
SCSO soon found the man driving west on Trent. WSP was in the area responding to an unrelated crash, and was made aware of the situation.
SCSO said the man fired the AR-15 out the window while driving down Trent.
Deputies deployed spikes to try to stop the suspect between Pines and Sullivan.
As the front tire began to deflate from the spikes near the intersection of Pines and Trent, the suspect hit two cars, including a WSP patrol car.
SCSO said the man then got out of the car and fired the AR-15. He exchanged fire with law enforcement and was shot.
Law enforcement administered aid, but the man was declared dead at the scene. SCSO did not specify which law enforcement agency shot and killed the man.
SCSO said a firearm with what appeared to be “a stove pipe round in the chamber” was laying next to the dead suspect.
SCSO Sheriff John Nowels said the suspect had no “significant criminal history” and that there is, at this time, no “obvious motive.”
Spokane Police Department is leading the investigation.
SCSO said any businesses or homes near Trent Avenue that find any shell casings should contact Crime Check.
This is a developing story.
