SPOKANE, Wash. — Sen. Marcus Riccelli issued a statement on the assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman.
“Violent extremism and assassination of lawmakers, rhetoric targeting judges and our judicial system, unprecedented executive branch overreach trying to step on co-equal branches and our constitutional balance of power — let’s be clear we are in the midst of an all out assault on our American democracy. We must not just condemn this we must awaken collectively,” Sen. Riccelli’s statement read.
Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot and killed early Saturday morning in “what appears to be a politically motivated assassination,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said at a news conference Saturday.
Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot multiple times by the same suspect. Both have undergone surgery and are alive.
Both lawmakers are members of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
