NEZ PERCE, Idaho. — Someone impersonating a sheriff’s deputy attempted to collect a fraudulent payment over the phone on Thursday, according to Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 12, NCSO received a report of a person receiving a call from someone claiming to be ‘Deputy Dan Brown’ with Whitman County.

The caller ID showed the Whitman County Court House, but this was a scam.
The person claiming to be a deputy told the victim they had missed a court date and would need to pay $2,000 or they would be picked up on a warrant.
NCSO said the call was a scam and that law enforcement does not call and advise of warrants.
“Law enforcement will never request payment through gift cards, Apple Pay, crypto currency or any other method. Please don’t fall prey to these types of scams,” said NCSO.
If you ever receive a suspicious call, email or text message claiming to be from your bank, law enforcement or other agency or organization, asking for sensitive information or payment, hang up immediately and contact your bank or the agency directly to confirm if the communication was, in fact, from them.
