SPOKANE, Wash. — One local family is grateful to welcome their daughter back home after her mountain climbing achievement.
Two weeks ago, Katelyn Sims was scaling Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
Sims achieved the double crown by summiting Everest, then hiking down and back up Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest mountain.
“You wake up in the mornings and — the equivalent is like, you always feel like you walked up four flights of stairs. That’s what I would say. It’s just a constant struggle. But you get used to that. That’s the new normal,” Sims said.
Sims is a Cheney High School graduate who always enjoyed exploring the outdoors in the Inland Northwest. She uses trail runs to train for these climbs.
“I do encourage people who want to do it because it’s an unbelievable experience, an investment in your life, like two months of your life,” Sims said.
Sims says she’s happy to have her feet on the ground again, but she’s not finished climbing. Mount Denali is next on her list.
