WENATCHEE, Wash – Piles of flowers and stuffed animals surround pictures of three young girls, murdered over the weekend in central Washington.
An area in Wenatchee’s Memorial Park has turned into a memorial for Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia Decker, ages nine, eight and five.
Chelan County investigators say the girls were killed by their father Travis Decker, who allegedly asphyxiated them and left them in the woods near Leavenworth.
Their death has cast a dark cloud over the town in central Washington.
Mourners filled Memorial Park Tuesday afternoon for a candlelight vigil.
Wednesday, people were still coming by leaving flowers.
“When one mom cries, we all cry,” said Amber Philipper who came by the memorial Wednesday. “It’s sad. We can all put ourselves in that position and understand a little bit of what’s going on.”
Chelan County Commissioners put the flag outside the courthouse at half-staff Wednesday to honor the girls.
Local businesses, churches and other organizations have posted their condolences on social media.
“In this immense time of grief, we stand united in mourning,” wrote The Human Bean coffee stand on Facebook. “As a community, we are saddened beyond measure, and we hold one another close in compassion, remembrance, and support.”
A GoFundMe account to support the girls’ mother Whitney has raised more than $500,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the search was ongoing for Travis Decker. Anyone who sees him is asked to call 911 and not approach him, as he could be armed and dangerous.
