SPOKANE, Wash. — Wildfire potential is expected to be higher than usual in much of the Inland Northwest next month, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).
NIFC’s outlook for June shows an above normal outlook for both eastern Washington and north Idaho, with that only expected to worsen as the summer continues.
This is due to excessive dry fuel in the region that leaves areas more prone to fire danger.
NIFC’s report also says while lightning activity was relatively normal last year for the Northwest region, “human-caused fires rose above pre-COVID averages, a trend likely to continue this year.”
The U.S. Department of the Interior says you can still reduce your wildfire risk by checking weather conditions, building your campfire in an appropriate location, dousing your campfire until it’s cold, not parking vehicles on dry grass, properly maintaining your vehicles and equipment, keeping a shovel and fire extinguisher in your car in case of a fire, checking the tires, axles and bearings on your trailer, never operating equipment that produces sparks near dry vegetation, checking local regulations before using fireworks and never burning debris when it is windy or when burn restrictions are in place.
