SPOKANE, Wash. — Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire in Spokane’s Shadle Park neighborhood early this morning.
The Spokane Police Department received several calls about gunshots at 4:30 a.m. from a home on West Rockwell Avenue. A SWAT team and other units arrived and found a young child and mother inside the house.
The shooting suspect was ultimately arrested and taken into police custody.
The incident shook residents in the quiet neighborhood.
“Definitely scary because I have a little baby,” said Carly Hirai, who has lived in the area for five years. “Seeing police walk by with big guns, while I am holding my baby looking out the window, was a little bit scary.”
Hirai said the scene looked very different from a typical morning when neighbors walk dogs or jog. Instead, police cars, investigators and a SWAT team filled the block.
“It is definitely kind of nerve-racking,” Hirai said.
The incident raised safety concerns for residents in what many consider a close-knit community.
“Definitely makes you think twice if I should be in a safer area,” Hirai said.
After the shooting, neighbors checked on each other to make sure everyone was safe. Residents said this sense of community gave them hope during the incident.
