SPOKANE, Wash. — A highly anticipated Home Depot will open its doors on Spokane’s South Hill next month, bringing both excitement and concern to the neighborhood.
After six years of vacancy following the closure of Shopko, the new Home Depot at 44th and Regal in the Southgate neighborhood is almost ready for business.
“We are constantly seeing customers approaching the front door, asking if we’re open yet,” said Chris Bean, store manager for Home Depot.
Bean said plans for the store have long been in the works.
“Both our shoppers and associates have been looking [forward to] and excited about a South Hill location for a number of years.” he said.
While many in the community are eager for the new addition, some local businesses are preparing for increased competition.
Ruggiero’s Ace Hardware, a family-owned store that has served South Hill for more than 20 years, sits just across the street from the new Home Depot.
“They’re a big-time competitor in the space. But we’re going to continue to do what we do. And that’s provide excellent customer service,” said Clay Hall, Ace Hardware’s store manager. “It’s always a concern when a competitor-like company moves in this close. But, we do different things. We approach the business in different ways.”
Despite the competition, Hall said Ace is confident in its role as a local staple with loyal customers.
For nearby residents and the store’s employees, the end of the long wait is a welcome change.
“It’s great to finally bring it to fruition,” Bean said.
The Home Depot grand opening will be held June 11, with the store officially opening at 6 a.m. on June 12.
