SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — With beautiful Memorial Day weekend weather ahead, officials warn about the dangers in local waterways, especially the Spokane River.
Despite warm temperatures outside, the water remains dangerously cold and fast-moving. The Spokane River currently sits at 54 degrees – cold enough to cause the body to lock up immediately.
“It’s very deceptive, it pulls heat from your body very quickly,” said Mark Gregory from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Gregory, who served on the dive and rescue team for years, has witnessed tragic outcomes firsthand.
“I’ve pulled people out of the water within minutes and they haven’t made it,” he said. “We have ways of trying to get there quickly, but it takes time. And that time is precious when you go underwater.”
The speed of the water presents another major hazard. Kevin Wright from the U.S. Geological Survey reports the water is moving at 6,400 cubic feet per second.
“Basically imagine 6,400 basketballs passing you in a second,” Wright explained.
Beneath the surface lurk additional dangers – powerful undercurrents, rocks, and tree branches that can trap people underwater.
For those still wanting to enjoy the riverside, Gregory emphasizes one critical safety measure: “So far I’ve never had to pull someone from the water who was wearing a life jacket who didn’t make it.”
Even those only planning to get their feet wet should keep a life jacket nearby, as one slip can quickly become dangerous.
Officials suggest exploring other outdoor activities until July when river conditions typically improve. The region offers plenty of alternatives like rock climbing, bike riding, and trail running.
