LEWISTON, Idaho — The City of Lewiston announced its special election bond for infrastructure upgrades has failed.
The city said a supermajority of voters did not approve a $25 million general obligation bond in the May 20 election.
Unofficial election results have nearly 62% of voters approving the bond and 38% against. The bond needed two-thirds or 67% to pass.
Had it passed, the bond would have gone to replace and upgrade the city’s water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.
The city says the money would have replaced aged and deteriorating underground pipes, some of which are more than 100 years old.
The city will now look at alternatives to replace the outdated infrastructure.
“We value the voice of our voters and are grateful for everyone who took the time to participate in the election,” said Mayor Dan Johnson. “While the bond measure did not pass, the need to address our aging underground infrastructure remains.”
