You might soon see different or less plastic packaging with your take-out order, due to a law recently passed in Olympia.
On Saturday, Governor Bob Ferguson signed the Washington Recycling Reform Act into law.
“The law updates the state’s recycling systems and reduces unnecessary packaging, funds statewide collection services and ensures materials put in curbside bins are recycled,” reads a press release from Zero Waste Washington, an environmental advocacy group.
The law requires the state to establish a ‘producer responsibility organization’ to bring investment and financial sustainability into Washington’s recycling system.
“We are already starting to see brands and manufacturers shift from plastic to paper packaging,” said Peter Steelquist, Washington Policy Manager for the Surfrider Foundation. “And under this new law, they are going to be highly motivated to develop better alternatives and reduce the amount of excess packaging and plastic. This will mean less packaging that ends up in our waters and beaches.”
