SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — High schoolers from across Spokane County spent their Saturday building gardening sheds as part of an annual construction camp.
The event, hosted by the Spokane Home Builders Association, hopes to address the workforce shortage facing the construction industry by inspiring students to explore careers in the trades.
“We have a lot of older people that are in the trades and so it’s a great industry to get into,” said Fred Anderson, the president of the Spokane Home Builders Association.
The one-day event let high schoolers partner with volunteers who work in the trade industry, a unique experience for both parties involved.
“It’s always fun. I always like working with people from the trades. They’re able to guide you and then also the place to make friends because there’s kind of stuff you’re doing,” said Ferris High School student Haven Cregan.
All the sheds made will be donated to Union Gospel Mission.
Students got insight into various construction fields, including carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
