SPOKANE, Wash. — Lithium-ion batteries power our everyday devices like cell phones and power tools, but they can be dangerous when not handled properly.
The Spokane River Forum hosted a battery take-back event on Saturday to help residents safely dispose of old batteries and prevent dangerous fires.
“If you throw those in your trash, sometimes they can cause a truck to catch on fire, you know, on the way to the solid waste transfer station or at the station itself,” said Kristin Davis, Communications Manager for Spokane Public Works. “So, we really need people to understand the dangers around lithium-ion batteries.”
The event provided a convenient way for residents to remove potentially hazardous batteries from their homes and dispose of them safely.
For those who missed the battery drop-off event, batteries can still be taken to any of the three Spokane County Solid Waste Transfer Stations.
You can find the full list of drop-off locations by clicking here.
By using these designated drop-off locations, community members help prevent fires and protect waste management workers and facilities.
