Ed Sheeran/Instagram
Ed Sheeran is doing what most of us do when we’re procrastinating, feeling nostalgic, or dodging responsibilities: digging through an old phone. But because he’s Ed Sheeran and not just some guy with a cracked iPhone 6, he turned that scroll session into an actual Instagram account: @teddysoldphone.
The account is basically a digital time capsule from 2015, just in time to promote his new single “Old Phone,” dropping this Thursday (April 29) at 8 a.m. PT. It’s packed with never-before-seen photos, random texts, scribbled lyrics, and peak early-2010s energy.
And yes, in true Ed fashion, there’s a surprise Swiftie Easter egg. One of the photos he posted is of a homemade jar of jam that Taylor Swift gifted him back in the day. The note on it reads:
“Yo Ed — I’m really happy 4 you and I’m gonna let you finish but this is the best jam of all-time. — T”
Yes. Taylor threw shade at Kanye via jam. And I personally think that deserves a Grammy.
Ed says he got inspired to write “Old Phone” while revisiting the phone during the whole copyright trial over Thinking Out Loud (aka the Marvin Gaye Let’s Get It On case). Spoiler alert: he won in 2024 and didn’t copy anything except our hearts.
In one caption, Ed said turning that old phone back on felt like a “time capsule” — full of messages from people who aren’t in his life anymore, and photos with friends he’s lost touch with. Basically, it was a very emotional scroll down memory lane — just with more chart-topping hits and fewer food delivery receipts.
Anyway, the song is coming, the Instagram is serving, and now I’m off to dig up my own old phone in hopes I find a forgotten jam jar from Taylor Swift too. A girl can dream.
