SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Hundreds of track athletes and community members from across the area set aside their rivalries and ran together Tuesday in honor of a high school athlete who lost his life.
Trey Flett loved running. His father, Raymond Flett Jr., said it was Trey’s dream to represent Wellpinit and compete at the state level. Trey died by suicide on Saturday.
“It was a shocker. Last thing we expected. He always had a smile on his face,” Raymond Flett Jr. said.
On Tuesday, Wellpinit conference athletes, coaches and their communities gathered at Valley Christian School to run a race together in memory of Trey.
VCS Track Coach, Mick Drick, said he has never before seen the track community come together like they did for Tuesday’s race.
“We want to make sure that we are always caring for others, and we do that however we can. In this particular instance, this is what we’re doing to show them that we care, and that we love them as competitors,” he said.
The track was filled with hugs and tears as the community remembered Trey.
His father said he was moved by the event.
“To see everyone come together and show support for my son means a lot,” he said.
Raymond Flett Jr. shared an important message in his son’s memory.
“Kids, if you guys feel bad, ask for help,” he said.
