PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University (WSU) officials confirmed that three international students have had their visa status revoked amid increased immigration enforcement actions nationwide, according to a campus-wide message sent on Tuesday.
Of the three students whose visa status was revoked, one had already graduated while two are currently enrolled, according to the university communication.
WSU System President Elizabeth R. Cantwell and Provost T. Chris Riley-Tillman addressed the situation and outlined resources for those affected by recent federal immigration policy changes.
“As university leadership continues to navigate through federal changes, we are seeing an upswing in immigration enforcement actions,” Cantwell and Riley-Tillman stated in their message to the campus community.
Officials said WSU is working with affected students through its International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office at 509-335-4508, to identify options for continuing their education, primarily through WSU’s Global Campus. Students who receive notification of status changes or visa revocation should immediately contact ISSS for assistance, the message advised.
WSU also provided guidance for potential interactions with immigration enforcement officials, recommending everyone know their rights. The university has developed specific guidance explaining the difference between public and limited access spaces on WSU property.
For international community members considering travel, the university advises carrying original registration documents for both domestic and international travel. These documents can include green cards, employment authorization documents, arrival-departure records and travel permits.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to our community, and in our commitment to our land-grant mission and its core outcome of access and opportunity for all,” Cantwell and Riley-Tillman wrote in the campus-wide message.
WSU officials anticipate these enforcement actions will continue based on national trends.
The university encourages anyone with questions to reach out to ISSS or Risk Management for questions about travel.
