PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is putting a pause on non-essential hiring, travel and other spending.
Beginning April 1, WSU will pause non-essential faculty and staff hiring, salary increases and non-essential travel and training. It will also more closely review essential purchases or contracts, renegotiate or end non-essential contracts and reduce food purchases.
WSU says it is preparing budget plans with funding reductions from 1-10% to ensure the university remails stable during these uncertain times.
“We know that these tactics are not necessarily a long-term solution. What we had in the past is not necessarily our future,” a letter from WSU leadership distributed Wednesday to all faculty and staff explains. “The landscape of higher education is evolving, and to thrive, we are going to have to shape our future together.”
Many public research universities across the nation are facing the same financial uncertainty as WSU due to changes implemented by the Trump Administration.
“Let us reiterate that we are committed to WSU remaining a strong RI institution with a complement of undergraduate and graduate degree programs that serve our historic land-grant mission,” the letter to faculty and staff reads.
