SPOKANE, Wash. — A neighborhood group is working to make some of Spokane’s nature trails safer to access.
Friends of the Bluff is a nonprofit organization dedicated to maintaining and protecting High Drive Bluff, the network of trails beneath High Drive and above Hangman Creek.
The group is hoping to build a set of stairs in one of the area’s public access points near Rocket Market.
“It’s to help people with average walking abilities be able to pop right down onto this trail network,” said Dorothy Tibbetts with Friends of the Bluff.
The organization has the greenlight from the City of Spokane, and just needs to finish raising money to fund the project.
On Sunday, the group went door to door throughout the High Drive neighborhood to canvas and help fundraise for the stairs.
As of March 30, they are just about $10,000 short of their total $58,000 goal.
“I think it enhances our human nature to get out in the trees and enjoy nature,” Tibbetts said.
Friends of the Bluff said it hopes to secure the funding for the stairs by summer.
