KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — A Kootenai County organization is taking a new approach to make owning a home in North Idaho more affordable.
The Panhandle Affordable Housing Alliance (PAHA) is in the process of building 28 new homes in Post Falls near Ponderosa Elementary School.
Casey Doyle was one of many middle income Kootenai County citizens who thought homeownership would not be a reality for a long time.
“We were thinking when we hit 50 and the housing market crashes, then we would buy,” Doyle said.
A University of Idaho study found that the average price for a home in the area has gone up by 160% between 2016 and 2023.
“There is nothing on the market today that address our middle income and upper middle income wage earners,” said Maggie Lyons, executive director for PAHA.
This new home development, titled Miracle on Britton, hopes to address that by providing shared equity homes at below market value.
The first five homes for this development are close to completion. To qualify, a household must earn $75,000 to $126,000 annually.
Garrett Kreitz is a new homeowner through Miracle on Britton.
“What they’re doing and the programs they are putting in place, it’s bringing it back into achievability,” he said.
The ultimate goal of this project is to help families build wealth in the place they call home.
