SPOKANE, Wash. — Your home may still be covered in a thick layer of snow, but that winter wonderland is coming to an end.
The city of Spokane is warning people about the possibility of flooding and dangerous road conditions in residential neighborhoods this weekend due to increased snowmelt.
With that snowmelt expected to flow down hills into the city, officials say to watch out for more water at intersections and at bottom of hills.
To avoid flooding, it is recommended to clear your storm drains of any snow or debris so water can drain easily.
“If you know where the storm drain is, by your house or by your business, you can clear a little path through the snow to allow the water to run toward that storm drain. It’s going to make it a lot better,” said Spokane public works director Marlene Feist.
The National Weather Service said if your home is prone to basement flooding, you should get your pump out now and so you’re prepared.
Feist also warns to use caution on the roads and look out for puddles.
“Sometimes below a big puddle is a pothole. That’s another reason to be careful when you go through that you’re not hitting those things really hard because you can’t necessarily see what’s under the puddles of water,” said Feist.
Large potholes can be filled with water and extremely hard to spot while driving.
“Just be prepared when you’re driving around town over the weekend to watch for places with standing water so that you don’t end up hydroplaning or hitting something unexpected under the puddle that you don’t see,” Feist said.
If you do notice a large pothole, the city says to call 311 and report it so it can be put on a list to repair.
