SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane has activated its Full-City plow operation following heavy snowfall, with crews working around the clock to clear streets.
According to the City of Spokane, snowplowing priorities start with arterials and hills, secondary routes to schools and hospitals, and finally, residential areas.
Under the Full-City plow plan, crews will work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until all 2,200 lane miles of city streets have been cleared.
The Streets Department has four material sites around Spokane, making it easier for plow teams to replenish sand and deicer supplies.
The City’s website will post the order for plowing residential routes, along with an updated plow map showing progress as crews work. The residential plow map will also be available for reference.
The City estimates that plowing will take about three days to complete once snow stops falling, though timing will depend on weather conditions.
Additional personnel from the Water and Wastewater departments will assist in the effort.
“With the heavier snowfall overnight and more cold temperatures expected, we are expanding our efforts to include residential areas to ensure safer driving conditions,” said Street Director Clint Harris.
Plow teams in residential areas will use snow gates to minimize berms in front of driveways and clear snow away from sidewalks where possible. Crews may push snow to center medians in some areas.
To help with snow clearing, the City asks residents to:
Park on the odd side of the street to aid plows.Clear a 36-inch pedestrian path on sidewalks and assist neighbors when possible.Avoid shoveling snow into the street; instead, place it in your yard.Remove snow from parked cars for better visibility.Clear snow and ice around mailboxes and storm drains.Report downed trees or large limbs to 311.
Motorists are advised to drive carefully in these wintry conditions, slow down, and avoid following or passing plow trucks for safety.
