SPOKANE, Wash – The man accused of shooting a 13-year-old in North Spokane last weekend had previously been accused of shooting at the house where the murder took place.
Not only do police say he fired shots the night of the murder, but someone in the home fired six shots back at him.
That information is part of the affidavit of facts filed to arrest Glen Dylan Burkey for second-degree murder.
Burkey was arrested in Missoula Wednesday and will be brought back to Spokane to face charges.
He’s accused of firing shots into a home on East Heroy early Saturday morning. Bullets hit Peperzak Middle School 8th grader Gavin Looper who was visiting the house with his dad.
According to the affidavit, Gavin was in a bedroom at the home that had previously been converted from a “man cave.” He was playing video games at around 2:30 a.m. when someone fired shots into the home.
The woman who lives in the home looked at video and saw a man she believed was Dylan Burkey.
The court documents say Burkey had been arrested for a drive-by shooting at the home in 2020.
She said the last time she saw Burkey was on New Year’s Eve when Burkey got into a fight with her husband at a bar.
“She knows the defendant thinks her husband is an informant to law enforcement,” police wrote in the affidavit.
The woman said Burkey was in her home around 2023 when the bedroom was still a “man cave.”
When police arrived at the home, they say the woman immediately identified Burkey as the suspect in the shooting.
Police reviewed video from the scene and saw a man approach the house. Within seconds, they heard five shots and saw the man running away.
Police say approximately six more shots were fired “but not from the male running away.”
Officers say video shows the man getting into a blue Subaru with a spoiler and black wheels.
In addition to bullet cases around the area, police also found three firearms in the home.
Police interviewed several friends of Burkey’s, including one who said he was out drinking with Burkey the night of the shooting.
The men were sketchy with details to police; both said they had been with Burkey at different times that night. They gave police details about the vehicle they were in and about a man they refer to as “Muggsy” running from the home and being shot at as he got into the car.
Through interviews and a photo montage, police identified Burkey as their suspect. They tried to arrest him at his home on East Sanson Monday night, but he was not there.
Police arrested him Wednesday in Missoula. He’ll be brought back to Spokane to face charges.
