AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — A new drug and alcohol treatment facility is opening up in Airway Heights.
Right now, Adult and Teen Challenge is able to host around 50 people for its residency program at its Spokane campus. Once the new outpatient facility is fully up and running, its executive director Tyson West says it could serve up to a thousand people.
“Being a part of this organization, being the executive director, never in a million years did I think that would be an option,” West said.
Adult and Teen Challenge started working in the West Plains in the early 80’s. It started work on a new outpatient facility just a few years ago.
The new facility will provide individual and group therapy rooms for people dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, but patients won’t be able to stay overnight like they would at its residency program.
“It’s a beautiful building and it took a lot of work and a lot of people to make it happen and now that we’re about to open, that’s when the real work begins,” West said.
West went through treatment at the facility himself and is excited about the difference this type of treatment could make in Spokane.
“Adult and Teen Challenge was program number 14 for me. My family brough me to this campus in 2011 and that was one of the best decisions I ever made,” West said.
He has been the executive director for the organization since 2017.
“We are a men’s campus here but once we’re fully functional and at full capacity with four counselors, we’ll be able to serve men and women and up to 1,000 additional people who need help a year,” he said.
Adult and Teen Challenge is a Christian faith-based program, but West says there will be non-religious programs for recovery available.
“Now that I get the opportunity to help other people who are caught up in the same bondage I was find and experience the same freedom that I’m blessed to be able to experience, It’s a passion it’s a call,” West said.
West said there are plans to have mental health counselor available at the new facility and there won’t be any requirements to participate.
