SPOKANE, Wash. — One community in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood knows it’s never to early to start preparing for fire season.
The Sans Souci West Mobile Park near Riverside Memorial Park is a community of over 200 homes for people 55-years and older.
“I think it’s wonderful. It’s kind of a little piece of heaven,” said resident, Bea Shine.
The community has one road in and one road out, which has the potential to be very dangerous if there were to be a wildfire.
“A fire would just go from home to home in here and be a major catastrophe. We would lose if we had a major wildfire. We could potentially lose most of the homes in this community,” said Steve Harris, Department of Natural Resources.
On Tuesday, the Spokane Fire Department and Washington State Department of Natural Resources, kicked off their multi-day clean-up effort to clear out shrubs across the park.
“There’s just a lot of flammable material,” said SFD’s Nick Jeffries. “The idea is that if there was a fire, or a fire across the river, the wildland embers could actually land on these Arborvitaes and Junipers and start them on fire, then igniting the structures.”
DNR said winter is the best time of year to figure out if there’s anything you can do to help mitigate wildfire risk near your home.
“That green shrub next to your house may actually be a major fire hazard. Also, pine needles in the deck or the eaves. Just little things like that are really important for landowners to be aware of to reduce their risk,” said Harris.
DNR offers free wildfire readiness plans and assessments on their website. You can access them here.
