SPOKANE, Wash. — The weather on New Year’s Day may not have been the best for hiking, but it didn’t stop people from enjoying nature on the first Discover Pass free day of the year in Washington.
Washington offers 12 days throughout the year where hikers, kayakers, and more don’t need a Discover Pass to explore state parks.
For some though, the free day doesn’t mean they still won’t spend the $30 on the pass.
One hiker, Michael Whittle, at Riverside State Park Wednesday says the pass is still worth it.
“Well, the benefits are the accessibility for one thing and also that they keep up the parks and the parking, having a place that you can go,” said Whittle.
The sentiment was shared by two other hikers, Norma White and Gina Cook, who were at the park training for the Portuguese Camino, a 25-day hike Cook had recently completed.
“You can’t get a better trail here,” said White. “Centennial Trail is wonderful and then in the summer, going on the trail for training.”
Both Cook and White say they buy the Discover Pass every year and will continue to do so even if they don’t use it just because they love Washington’s parks so much.
You can enjoy Washington’s parks on the next Discover Pass Free Day on January 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
You can also purchase your own Discover Pass at DiscoverPass.Wa.gov.
