SPOKANE, Wash. — One person died in Spokane County from the flu this week, according to Spokane Regional Health District.
The person was in their 60s and had underlying health conditions. They were one of 52 Spokane County residents hospitalized for the flu this season.
It was the season’s first flu-related death.
“Unfortunately, this is a sad example of how serious flu can be,” said Dr. Francisco Velazquez, Spokane County Health Officer. “Our hearts are with the family and friends who are grieving this terrible loss.”
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the throat, lungs and nose. Common symptoms often include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and body aches.
“Your best chance at protecting yourself and others is to get the flu vaccine,” said Velazquez.
