PULLMAN, Wash. – All season long, head coach Jake Dickert would credit his team for finding a way to win a big football game.
In the final game of the regular season, even Dickert couldn’t sugarcoat it.
“We found ways to lose a game, not ways to win a game.” Dickert said.
Dickert lists penalties, not converting after takeaways, the lack of explosive plays as just a few reasons Washington State lost to a two-win team.
The now 3-9 Wyoming Cowboys beat the now 8-4 Cougars by just a point, with a final score of 15-14 in Pullman.
“I’m really disappointed for our seniors… to not send them out the right way when we were capable of doing that is really disappointing,” Dickert said.
But more than that, Washington State just lost three games in a row after going 8-1 on the hardest stretch of the season. The final three games were supposed to be the easiest part of the 2024 campaign for the Cougs.
“We lost three games by a combined seven points… I don’t care who you play. you can’t go out there and not execute your job,” Dickert said.
The Cougars will play one more game with the chance to achieve a nine-win season. WSU qualified for a bowl game in week seven. We’ll learn where the Cougs will play next week.
“We gotta be better coaches, we gotta be better teachers,” Dickert said. “We’ve gotta put our guys in better positions to win… and that starts with me.”
