SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane accountant was sentenced to two years in federal prison Wednesday for embezzling over $715,000 from the Spokane medical practice where she worked.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington, Carol Dacaymat Casilla worked as an accountant for Spokane Dermatology between 2020 and 2023.
Court document showed Casilla used her title to fraudulently write company checks to herself and deposit them into her personal accounts. Casilla also made electronic transfers from company funds to her personal credit cards.
Some of the transfers were made to a fake company Casilla created to seem legitimate. Officials said Casilla made hundreds of these fraudulent transfers and stole more than $715,000 from Spokane Dermatology Clinic.
Along with the prison sentence, Judge Rice also ordered three years of supervised release as well as making Casilla pay restitution to SDC in the amount of $715,255.09.
“Ms. Casilla betrayed her employer’s trust and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars,” stated United States Attorney Vanessa Waldref. “Accountants and financial professionals like Ms. Casilla are given a significant amount of control over a company’s finances. This sentence should send a message that those who abuse their positions of trust to enrich themselves will be held accountable.”
