SPOKANE, Wash. — Downtown Spokane has been decorating for the holidays in anticipation of a very special guest.
Santa Claus is making his seasonal debut at River Park Square this Saturday! There are 100,000 lights twinkling on Post Street to celebrate the big jolly man’s arrival.
The merry and magical lane runs from Main Street to the railroad tracks. It came to life through a collaboration between the Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP) and Visit Spokane to bring a little extra cheer to the community this time of year.
“We want to make sure that everyone gets an opportunity to enjoy them as well as like gloomy season that tends to come right after the new year,” said Downtown Spokane Partnership’s Elisabeth Hooker.
The festive lights are accented with holiday greenery and window decorations.
“This year we partnered with the property owners here along Post and really did add up. If you look above the road, you’ll actually see lights spanning the street, which is really exciting and a first here in Spokane,” Hooker said.
On Saturday, the merry lane will have entertainment from local high schools, music and holiday treats. River Park Square will also open its doors to its guest of honor in a fabulously festive way.
“We have a show to welcome Santa Claus that will be hosted by Mrs. Claus,” Rita Koefod, the River Park Square marketing director, said. “We’ll have the Ferris dance team and a lot of community performers.”
Families have the chance to snag a picture with Santa until Dec. 24 in front of the mall’s impressive 50-foot tall Christmas tree.
“This Christmas celebration is definitely a tradition for a lot of families here in Spokane,” Koefod said “River Park Square has been here for 50 years now. We’re actually celebrating our anniversary so this is definitely a celebration that we put on every year.”
“We really want to invite everyone out,” Hooker said.
The holiday cheer kicks off Saturday and continues every weekend from now until Christmas.
