SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A Mead High School student died in a car crash on West Rutter Parkway on Thursday morning, according to the school district.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said a car crashed into a tree around 10:35 a.m. along West Rutter Parkway. The person inside the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the driver was heading west on Rutter Parkway, left the road and struck a large tree.
Around 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, Mead High School confirmed to 4 News Now that the driver who died was a student.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share sad news with you that Panther Nation lost one of its Panthers today. We are respecting the direction and timing of the student’s family and sharing no further information at this time,” said the school in a memo sent to families.
The school said it is providing a crisis team and counseling to support students and staff as the community navigates the loss.
The crisis team will be on-site Friday, Monday, Tuesday and after Thanksgiving break as needed.
The road was closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon while SCSO investigated. It is now open again to travelers.
This is a developing story.
