DEER PARK, Wash. — The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office has determined three Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies will not face charges for shooting and killing a man wanted for child rape in Deer Park.
The incident occurred March 29 when deputies went to the home of Donald Hegel who was wanted for child rape and molestation charges out of Stevens County.
An hours-long standoff occurred at the home. During the standoff, Hegel repeatedly told law enforcement to “shoot me.”
SWAT eventually breached the home, and Hegel was armed with a realistic-looking replica firearm. Hegel was shot and killed by Deputies Josia Loo and Samuel Turner and Detective Travis West.
The prosecutor’s office says the deputies were justified in using lethal force. Hegel also had methamphetamine and alcohol in his system.
