SPOKANE, Wash — Local organizations came together on Monday to give back and support dozens of veterans and their families.
On November 11, the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center hosted their annual Veterans Day Drive Thru event to provide veterans in need with food and other important resources.
2nd Harvest gave away over 10,000 pounds of food to nearly 150 veterans and their families during the event.
Volunteer and U.S. Army Veteran , Andrew Caster, said it makes sense why many of the volunteers were veterans themselves.
“Veterans who are volunteering here, obviously get the continuation of serving their fellow man that caused them to join the service in the first place, and I think at the same time, the satisfaction of going over and helping other people that are in need,” he said.
Each veteran and their family received about 40 or 50 pounds of food, including frozen meat and bags of veggies.
“My hope is that the older veterans who may have experienced not so much of a warm welcome home actually feel like we care and we are here to support them and we are here for them now,” said volunteer and Marine Corps veteran, Richard Canning.
The American Red Cross, Vitalant, Daughters of the American Revolution and others were also at the event to show their support and provide helpful resources.
Canning said showing appreciation and saying ‘thank you’ to veterans goes a long way.
“Veterans tend to show off their veteran-hood. We always have our caps on that’ll tell you that they’re a veteran and you can thank them for their service,” he said.
Canning said he doesn’t always know how to respond when someone thanks him for his service, but that his usual reply is, ‘It’s my honor.’
