COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — CDA Public Schools is examining a new policy that lays out the steps its schools are required to take when they receive a threat.
According to CDA Public Schools, the district receives multiple threats a year. The new policy would give the district’s schools a specific set of guidelines to follow in those situations.
Although many of the schools were already using these guidelines, the new policy would ensure schools are held accountable in the future.
“This is more of a transparent policy that shows parents how it’s done and what the steps we tare are through a policy and procedure on threat assessments,” said Thomas Gandy, Safety and Security Coordinator for CDASD.
Gandy said parents play a very important role during a threat scenario.
“We take a whole community approach,” he said.
The policy’s threat assessment process can be activated by an administrator, school leader, parent or guardian.
If a threat assessment has been enacted, the student may go through a prompt interview process.
“The hope is that early intervention will prevent anything from happening down the road,” said Gandy.
Deputy Superintendent Mike Nelson, said CDASD would be the first in Idaho to adopt this kind of policy.
The policy is under a public comment period through November 10. To make your voice heard on the policy, click here.
