POST FALLS, ID — In response to a recent crash involving a high school student on a bicycle, the Post Falls Police Department is ramping up efforts to ensure the safety of students in school zones.
The incident, which occurred just outside Post Falls High School, has raised concerns among parents about the safety of the intersection at Cecil and Poleline Avenue. Local residents describe the area, particularly the nearby roundabout, as a hazard for students and drivers alike, many of whom are freshly 16 and navigating the road for the first time.
Over the next few weeks, families in the Post Falls School District can expect an increased presence of police officers in school zones. The department is assigning more personnel to monitor traffic, focusing on areas such as Ponderosa Elementary and several key locations, including Spokane/16th, Idaho/15th, and Chase (Poleline to Mullan).
Last Thursday, officers conducted traffic stops at Post Falls High School, where they reported numerous violations.
The Post Falls Police Department is urging pedestrians to use crosswalk buttons, a guideline many students, particularly around Post Falls High School, are not following.
Starting today, officers will be stationed at Ponderosa Elementary during student drop-off and pick-up times to enforce traffic laws and promote safe practices. Patrols will specifically target speeding and crosswalk violations, aiming to create a safer environment for children commuting to and from school.
The department emphasizes that these efforts are designed to make the journey to school safer for all families in the community.
