SPOKANE, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation is planning to tear down and find new locations for two pedestrian overpasses in the East Central neighborhood.
The current pedestrian overpasses are on Regal Street and Custer Road.
East Central community members hope a new pedestrian overpass will better connect the neighborhood.
“Well, it will help connect back into our retail center on the other side of the freeway. They will be a lot safer than they were before. It will be easier to get across, so we are excited to see those come to the area,” said Doug Trudeau, Chair of the East Central Neighborhood Council.
The plan is part of the ongoing North Spokane Corridor Project, which will connect Highway 395 to Highway 90 by 2030.
“Again, there were three bridges there in the past and there is going to be three new bridges there when the North Spokane Corridor comes through and finishes up,” said Terrence Lynch, engineer on the project.
As of now, WSDOT said it has some potential ideas for where the new bridges could go, but that it is still up for discussion.
“There are a couple different options for consideration. We want to hear from the neighborhood which ones meet the theme, desires and visual effects of the neighborhood,” said Lynch.
The current pedestrian bridges are not set to come down until 2025.
