MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. — Seniors in Medical Lake can enjoy a free meal with friendly faces at a new cafe set up by Meals on Wheels.
The Silver Cafe, which is housed in St. Johns Lutheran Church near Hallett Street and Herb Street, was created by Meals on Wheels to provide seniors experiencing isolation a welcoming space to socialize and enjoy a warm meal with friends.
“Often times, we are the only point of contact that they have and the only interaction that they have with other people,” said Jeremiah Keevy, Business Development Director of Meals on Wheels.
Survivors of the 2023 Gray Fire in Medical Lake also said Silver Cafe is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Sue Fisher lost her home in the fire and has been attending the Silver Cafe in Cheney for the last coupe of years.
On Wednesday, she was able to attend the cafe in her hometown for the first time.
“People don’t come for the food so much… they come for socialization and getting out and being around,” said Fisher.
Meals on Wheels operates 12 other Silver Cafes in the greater Spokane area that serve around 4,500 people.
“It is really our mission to assist people who are in critical need of services and this community in specific has been ravished by a natural disaster,” said Keevy.
Fisher said the community she gained from the Silver Cafe was essential in providing her with what she needed to recover after the fire.
“My family group on Thursdays in Cheney was very supportive of me, and gave me many things that I needed. They are always there for me,” she said.
Karen Kero attended the Silver Cafe in Medical Lake with Fisher and said services like the cafe are vital to people’s wellbeing.
“We can have a little bit more fellowship with each other and meet new people,” said Kero.
The Silver Cafe in Medical Lake is located at 223 S. Hallett Street and offers free lunch to seniors every Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
