SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A 17-year-old died Sunday morning from injuries he received when he was hit by a Jeep on West Melville Road near Four Lakes on August 27.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the 17-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle traveling west on the roadway around 8:30 p.m. The driver pulled over on the side of the road to check the tie-down straps on the vehicle. The victim got out and was standing near the center line of the road.
The Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened when the driver of the Jeep hit the victim. The driver of the Jeep remained on scene and tried to help the victim.
According to investigators, the teen was wearing dark clothing when he was struck. Both vehicles had headlights on and it was unclear why he was standing in the roadway.
“It appears this is a tragic accident resulting in the loss of a young man’s life,” the Sheriff’s Office said in the press release.
Investigators do not believe speed or impairment are factors in the crash.
