SPOKANE, Wash — The Spokane Fire Department responded to multiple brush fires west of Browne’s Addition in Spokane on Monday afternoon.
Crews arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m. on August 19 to find 3 to 5 acres on fire in a wooded area of Peaceful Valley.
Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the flames.
Crews said the flames were out by 6 p.m. and that they have begun mop-up of any remaining hot spots.
Justin DeRueyter with SFD said the fires are suspected to be arson.
“When we have two fires right across the street this time, we’re certainly thinking this is probably malicious intent.”
According to SFD, the fires came within 15 feet of the condos atop the hill.
“When you have people threatening homes, that gets serious, we take that very seriously. These can get complex and hurt and kill people pretty quickly,” DeRueyter said.
