Last weekend, my husband took our 3-year-old son on an epic “man date” to Monster Jam. With a new baby in the house (we welcomed our daughter in January!), we’ve been trying to do individual dates with our son so he gets that extra bit of one-on-one attention. And what better way to make a memory than with giant trucks doing flips, right?
Now, I’ll be honest—this was his first big, loud event, and my mommy heart was all over the place. While he was probably dreaming of trucks revving engines and flying over dirt mounds, I was researching the best toddler-friendly ear protection. We settled on some heavy-duty headphones.
The whole thing was a surprise, and as soon as they arrived, my husband sent me a photo of our little guy’s face—eyes wide, mouth open, completely mesmerized by the scene in front of him. (Cue my heart melting.) Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. He had the time of his life, cheering for each truck as they did stunts and, of course, getting super serious about the “best” truck in each round. By the end of the day, he was a certified Monster Jam fan, and I realized this was one of those core memories we’d cherish forever.
So, will we be doing this again next year when Monster Jam rolls back into Spokane? Absolutely. And next time, I think I’ll tag along and join the fan club!
Reflection on Individual Date Days
Since our daughter arrived, these little one-on-one outings have become our thing. They don’t have to be big (okay, Monster Jam was a big one) but carving out that time to be fully present with him has been so special. Whether it’s a trip to the park, a short lunch date, or something louder and bigger, these moments are reminders that it’s not always about the activity itself but about being there and making memories that he’ll carry with him.
