KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho – If you’re driving through the Spirit Lake area anytime soon, you’ll want to give yourself extra time to account for the roadwork.
Starting July 18, the Idaho Transportation Department will shift traffic from existing State Highway 54 to a new section of pavement between SH-41 and Ramsey Road.
The detour is part of an ongoing highway improvement project.
Drivers will use the new roadway section while crews begin rebuilding the existing lanes. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph and passing will not be allowed for the remainder of the construction season.
Access to side streets and driveways in the area will be temporarily closed for the construction in the coming days and weeks. The closures will be short and only in place as long as necessary, likely an hour or less, according to ITD.
Drivers should use caution and watch for construction crews and signs.
The highway improvement project is on track to be completed by 2026.
